This land also boasts some of the most stunning wildlife and a full range of geographical features from dry deserts to lofty plains that consists lushy greenery, high mountains, natural scenic views that attracts million of overseas tourist from all over the world. To see some of the best nature that India has to offer one must visit the Madhav National Park.

Madhav National Park is spread over 354 kilometers square. It is located in Shivpuri District of Gawalior in the province of Madhya Pradesh. It was originally used as a private shooting reserve for the Maharaja of Gawalior. Today, under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, the forest and the wildlife residing in it is open throughout the year for national park lovers.

The park has many different types of deer, of which the most sighted are the graceful Indian gazelles, the Chinkara. Apart from these, there are some other animals four-horned antelopes, blackbuck, leopards and langurs attract visitors during Madhav National Park tours. It might as well be one's very own Jungle Book as these species are reminiscent of Rudyard Kipling's classic.

The lay of the land has wooded hills with a deciduous forest. Flat grassland encircles the natural lake. There is another man-made lake called Chandpata which is home to a variety of migratory birds like geese, teal and mallard. Another site, near the stream that crosses the Waste Weir is good for bird watching and one will see a cornucopia of beautiful birds here, from the white breasted kingfisher to the pond heron. Feast your eyes on a rainbow of colors as you catch the purple sunbird and the golden orioles flitting by.

Sakhya Sagar and Madhav Sagar lakes are the two lakes destinations to sustain biodiversity. These were created on Manier River in 1918. Sakhya Sagar Lake has a sailing club from which you can see the habitats of many reptiles like the crocodile, Indian python and monitor lizard. Madhav National Park also has a heritage sight and that is the George Castle. It was built in 1911 by Jivaji Rao Scindia at the Park's highest point for King George V. Tiger shooting is the major attraction of Madhav National park. Although King George did not pass that way for the shooting, viewing the sunset and the lake from this vantage point is quiet a unique experience.

  1. Thanks for the information. Shivpuri was a summer capital of Scindia rulers and the thick forests around it were hunting grounds for mughals. A paradise for adventure buffs and nature enthusiasts. For tourist accommodation, check out these hotels in Shivpuri.
