Diwali Festival Traditions in India

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, in its original form is also commonly known as "The Festival of Lights". It is a celebration of and a reverence to the Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, who is said to shower wealth and prosperity on those who worship her.

Over the years, Diwali has adopted certain traditions and customs, which have no significance to the religion. The tradition of sending cards on Diwali is done to strengthen and renew bonds between loved ones. Some of the cards will read, "Hope the Festival of lights enlightens your home and heart with peace and serenity." Others read, "May the Goddess of Wealth and the God of Knowledge bless you with their choicest blessings on this Diwali."

Many schools all across India encourage children to make handmade cards. The children learn about the traditions and customs in this way and they understand the importance of Deepavali and the importance to exchanging cards during the Diwali Festival. Exchanging cards creates a feeling of a new beginnings, good will and love.

These days, many Indians are away from their home country during Diwali, and cards, either real paper greeting cards, and now E-Cards, with the introduction of technology, have become popular. There are many free E-card websites, where you can now send loved ones E-greetings, or even real paper cards, along with gifts of sweets.
In India, many orphanages also allow their children to create cards, which are sold. The money obtained from selling these cards made by the orphans will go back into the organization to benefit the children. Many people sympathize with the children and buy charity cards, knowing that the money will be used toward a good cause.

The pictures used on Diwali cards, are mostly Diyas, signifying the light overcoming darkness, as well as discovering our own enlightened beings. Many cards have Rangoli designs on the cards. Rangoli is a special art form, done with colored sand and is an auspicious art project done at the entrance of each household. Rangoli is said to draw in the Goddess Lakshmi, where she will come into the home and bless the people with wealth and prosperity on Diwali night. Other cards have images of Lord Ganesha, the protector of wealth and the destroyer of ignorance; as well as Goddess Lakshmi, often seen sitting on a Lotus flower with coins at her feet.

In the end, Diwali is also a time for family and friends to absolve their issues, and to start over. Exchanging cards creates an atmosphere of good will, and allows one to convey their best wishes to their loved ones, by giving them the most beautiful Diwali cards.

Compare Mumbai with Hyderabad

Mumbai and the city of Pearls are poles apart, in their culture, in their lifestyle, in every aspect one can think of. But truly both the cities have their own charm and memories. The personal experience of staying in both the cities gives me immense joy in sharing my views and opinion about the two metropolitan.

1. Mumbai better known as the economic city, and Hyderabad for the famous Pearls and gems. The names are fit perfectly. Mumbai, city of dreams for many holds a lot of hopes and opportunities for the young minds, who Endeavor the impossible. Hyderabad, the city truly metropolitan in nature definitely has a lot of scope with its Hi-tech city, and the IT developments. But of course no one can beat Mumbai in this regards, as far as professional growth, and a competitive environment is concerned. So one point for the the economic city.

2. Talking about the infrastructure, definitely Hyderabad definitely scores a point. Even after staying for long in Mumbai I couldn’t understand why something could be done for the poor roads of such a popular city. Every year the cemented roads are made, government promising smooth drives this year, but once again the rain come and washes all the dreams. I guess the reason to be corruption in the roadways. Anyhow the point here is that Hyderabad is far better in the quality of its roads and highways.

3. Free home delivery; wow such an advantage in a metro where every second matters. Things have been made simpler in this city to a very little extent by the people, by giving this advantage of free home deliveries. You think of it and it would be delivered at the doorstep unlike in Hyderabad, even for your daily routine things one has to step out. Once you are used to that concept it becomes little frustrating at times to move out for small things.

4. Distances, a luxury in Hyderabad, and a burden in Mumbai. Everything is near by, you step out you can find a designer shop, the biggest mall of the, a movie hall, may be that’s one of the reasons we don’t have the concept of free home delivery in Hyderabad. Mumbai is maddening in terms of local traveling. Firstly the roads are always in a bad shape, secondly if you think for dinner out one has to have a margin of two hours just to reach the place, its irritating and you have no guarantee about the time, if you are stuck you are stuck for ever. Unlike in Hyderabad we do have jams, but since distances are not much its okay. And once you have lived in Mumbai everything seems a luxury. Your spouse comes home for lunches even.

5. Neighborhood, in Mumbai one can get a very multi-cultural truly cosmopolitan neighborhood, because of the large organized society kind of living, unlike in Hyderabad where the concept is less.

6. Weather is of course much better in Hyderabad. Very pleasant, unlike Mumbai where one job is to maintain your clothes, shoes and other things because of humidity.

7. The last not the least cost of living a very important factor for every city. Hyderabad is much cheaper in regards to housing, rentals, shopping everything. Mumbai is damn very expensive, one of the costliest cities of India
